Ambubachi Mela

Late June, temple doors closed for three days (2026: 23–25 June)

A great annual gathering at Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, marking the goddess's yearly menstruation. The temple doors close for three days, and pilgrims and ascetics from across India gather on Nilachal Hill until they reopen.

Ambubachi Mela is held at Kamakhya, the Shakti temple on Nilachal Hill, during the Assamese month of Ahaar, usually in late June. It celebrates the belief that the goddess Kamakhya undergoes her annual menstrual cycle at this time, a symbol of fertility and the earth's renewal with the monsoon. For three days the temple doors are closed and worship is suspended.

During these days, Nilachal Hill fills with pilgrims, sadhus, tantric practitioners and families from across India and Nepal, who camp around the temple and on the approach roads. Many observe restrictions on cooking and farming. On the fourth day, the temple reopens with ritual bathing of the goddess, and devotees receive small pieces of red cloth, considered highly auspicious.

Ambubachi is one of the largest religious gatherings in eastern India, and it is intense: crowded, hot, humid and wet, at the height of the monsoon. It is fascinating for those interested in Hindu tantric traditions, but demanding. We arrange visits with an experienced guide, keep them short and plan around the reopening day.

How to do it well

  1. Kamakhya is closed for darshan during the three days; plan any temple visit for before or after.
  2. Expect very large crowds and heavy security; keep visits short and stay with your guide.
  3. Pack for heat and rain, and choose a hotel away from Nilachal Hill to avoid traffic.
